It’s that time of year when the snow falls and the avalanche risk rises. When it comes to avalanches, what you don’t know absolutely can hurt you. From 1950-2007, avalanches were responsible for 221 fatalities in Colorado alone. While ski resorts spend millions of dollars on inbounds avalanche mitigation efforts, even ski resorts aren’t immune to avalanches. But don’t let this stop you from getting out and getting after it! With a little knowledge about how avalanches happen, you can arm yourself with the information you need to stay out of avalanche terrain in the first place and make wise decisions.
Thankfully, the Utah Avalanche Center has done an amazing job of educating the public about the risks of avalanches with their Know Before You Go program. We highly recommend taking a few minutes to watch this 15 minute long video.
